THE EXPLORERS.

Poster Project / Typography / Adobe Illustrator

Assigned a set of information and instructed to create a series of posters to display the events to take place. To develop and understand a hierarchal system, to effectively communicate a cohesive message throughout the different compositions, and to describe each inventors contribution and connection to the world and their peers.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Claudius Ptolemy, Gladys West, and Kürsat Ceylan were inventors who created tools to assist in discovering the world. After doing research on each of them, I established a list of words to aid in my creative process: discovery, exploration, fascination of the world, clarity, treasure hunt, aid, assistance, mathematics, geography, scientist, astrologer, mathematician, teacher, understanding, guidance, navigation, and curiosity. All of these words relate to who these inventors were as they were discovering and designing the invention they are best known for.

Circles move the viewers around the page, they aid in the exploration of new ideas or more information provided. I wanted to use circles to represent the unveiling and understanding of exploration these inventors portrayed. For Claudius Ptolemy, the circles represent planets, because he was an astronomer and curated maps and constellations by observing the solar system. Claudius observed the distant world, as the circles are distant from each other. For Gladys West, I used the circles to represent the earth’s uneven surface, the mountains, and the sun in the sky because she invented the technology used in programming the Global Positioning System (GPS) which maps the world topographically. The circles are very close together because she used her research to aid in the discovery of the world right in front of us. For Kürsat Ceylan, the circles represent buildings and objects close together, because he invented a new walking cane that identified objects above waist level for those who are visually impaired. The circles are evenly spaced around each other because his invention allowed people to discover their immediate world, to navigate their way around objects close together.

The colors are playful and eye-catching, to entice the onlooker to want to read more. The way I distributed the color among the posters helps pull together the series and allow one poster to easily translate to the next. Pulling a piece of a letter down, across, or diagonally helps to integrate the inventor’s name into the composition. The type manipulation further directs the viewers eye to explore a new place on the poster.

EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Initial photography using printed type. Potential to bring photographs into final poster and integrate into composition. Exploring new ways to use and manipulate type.

SKETCHES

Sketching a series of ideas by hand. Using research collected on each inventor, creating a visual system to connect each poster, yet allow each to maintain their own visual integrity.

TYPE STUDY

Exploration of sans serif fonts, weights, and posture to effectively communicate and create visual hierarchy of information on posters.

BLACK & WHITE ITERATIONS

Testing digital ideas in black and white.

COLOR 01

New attempts at creating hierarchy with color. Initial experiments with line, shape, and planes on colored posters.

INFO ARRANGEMENT TRIAL

Testing placement of body copy. In top iteration, body copy floats in the white space. In the bottom iteration, body copy fills one of the circles.

FINAL ITERATION

Increased saturation of colors, decided to widen columns of body text and keep it within the white space.
